Paraphrase is normally used in Book Reports or just plain talking to someone making sure you understand what they are saying. A paraphrase means to re-word what you heard or read into your own words, shortening it up. For example: (Not real)

"I was getting ready for my sicky day at work, as usual but my baby wouldn't stop crying so loud. Even worse my dog kept barking at her crying and he was even louder! The noises were so chaotic that it was hard for me to get all my stuff ready and it was all confusing. I ended up being late for work."

A way to paraphrase that is by saying:

"So with all the hectic noise, it was hard to concentrate on being on time for work."

You can use it when you read a book to help you understand or to show someone your listening, to get all the details. :)

A writer can use paraphrasing in a summary by restating the main ideas and arguments from a text in their own words. This helps to condense the information while still accurately representing the original content. By paraphrasing, the writer can convey the key points without directly quoting the text.

The writer can use his or her own words to show the meaning of the text being summarized.

You also use paraphrasing to avoid long, boring stretches of description or information. Instead of giving a day-by-day account of what happened on a long trip, you'd just paraphrase and say "They traveled across the wilderness to the fort."
