The most obvious would be a money market account. It earns a return from the day of deposit to the day of withdrawal. Unfortunately, today that is not very much. Another is t-bills. They are issued by the US treasury and come in various different maturities--7 day, 28 day, 91 day, 182 day are the most common if I am not mistaken. I believe they have begun also offering 1 year t-bills. Those two are the ones most people are familiar with. A pay day loan might also be considered a short term investment. That is not available to most people, but it does qualify.
