Liquid crystal is a state of matter that has fluid properties similar to a liquid and has a crystalline structure as well. Liquid crystal used in displays changes its optical properties when a voltage is applied to it. As the electrical field is applied, light is polarised in a different direction. Using a sheet of polarising material with it means that light will pass through or not depending on the electrical field.

An LCD display uses thousands of cells to build an image. By adding red, green and blue filters, the crystals are able to build a full color image by controlling the amount of light of each color that passes through the LCD panel.

LCDs don't produce any light by themselves so most LCD displays need a back light to produce an image. LCD televisions have used cold cathode tubes but are moving towards LED back lighting.
