Catchment/drainage basin.
The watershed.
Drainage basin is also called catchment, catchment area, catchment basin, drainage area, river basin, and water basin. It is an area of land. All water that falls on that land flows into one river.
A small river or stream is not called a river basin. A river basin is a portion of land drained by a river and it's tributaries. It encompasses all of the land surface dissected and drained by streams and creeks that flow downhill into one another, and eventually into one river.
Stream capture is when the upper portion of a river basin is diverted from one river basin to another by means of natural erosion.
Central Basin?
The word "basin" refers to the portion of a valley from which water drains into the river, and then to the sea. The Amazon Basin is another way to refer to the Amazon River Valley in northern and central South America.
