From time to time the computer removes data from the hard disc. Then it reuses that same area for information that it writes with new data. The computer can put data all over a disc. Looking for data in all sorts of places can make a computer run slow. A solution is to defragment the disc.

Defragmenting puts all parts of any program together and all parts of any data together. That way if the computer needs to load a program off the disk into memory, it will all be in one place and the computer can get it all real fast.

MAC computers that are left on overnight generally run a defragment program at 3:00 a.m. Friday morning. Others use a different schedule or must be instructed when to run that program. On older computers, some people would run it manually. They would run it when they ate lunch. They would break it when they finished lunch. Sometimes it would finish by then, sometimes not. Still, it kept the computer going much faster than if they never did it.

Defragmentation is basicly reorganizing files on your hard drive so that they are stored contiguously(in sequence) as oppose to being scattered all over your hard drive. It can be quite an issue if you are constantly saving and deleting files and even more so on network computers. The in-built defragger can be quite slow and is not the optimum solution for a corporate environment. Many opt for a fully automatic defragger that goes to work as soon as fragmentation takes place. Defragging should speed up your computer and increase system performance.
