Space is just basically what the word implies;empty space. It's what ever is not used in a painting, drawing, ect. It's just the white unused space on a canvas or paper that accents the actual art.

im not sure if any two architects could give you a similar answer to this. i have two ideas/uses of this term:

1) a way of describing the volumes that result from construction - but only when describing them very early on in design (or before design begins). for example, if designing an enclosed performance hall, it would be important to allow your imagination the freedom to create voluptuous spaces with complicated curves, undulations, slopes, etc (rather than a rigid cube). from this imaginary volume of space, acoustical engineers, architects, and structural engineers can refine how to make it a reality (where beams will be, span of beams, how wall panels will connect to structure, etc)

2) less common - you could use this word "conceptual space" to describe an illusion purposely created by design. for example, a mezzanine may appear to magically float and violate laws of physics - an effect which a designer no doubt would have gone through great deal to hide structural supports in inventive ways. (perhaps not a great example). point being, the reality of a space isn't necessarily how it is perceived by the brain.
