The denotation of a word is its definition, it is what the word normally means. The connotation of a word is a suggested or implied meaning that is additional to the denotation. For example, the word "natural" means found in the world of nature; not artificial. That is the denotation. Many people believe that anything natural is healthier and generally better than anything artificial, so "natural" is used as a complimentary term. That is the connotation.

* Denotation refers to the literal meaning of a word, the "dictionary definition."¨ For example, if you look up the word snake in a dictionary, you will discover that one of its denotative meanings is "any of numerous scaly, legless, sometimes venomous reptiles¡Khaving a long, tapering, cylindrical body and found in most tropical and temperate regions." * Connotation, on the other hand, refers to the associations that are connected to a certain word or the emotional suggestions related to that word. The connotative meanings of a word exist together with the denotative meanings. The connotations for the word snake could include evil or danger.

Denotation is the literal meaning of a word. The word 'car' denotes an object which has wheels and which drive and use as a mode of transport.

Connotation is a more subjective process. It's what happens when a person hears or sees a word and then what that word brings to mind.

For instance the word 'summer' denotes the season of the year which is usually the hottest and which follows spring. However, the word 'summer' connotes lots of other things such as holidays, the beach or the colour yellow.

"denotation" = the main, primary, literal meaning of a word (for example: "She is playing with a bucket and a spade").

"connotation" = a different meaning of the word, suggested by the context. (i.e.: "He kicked the bucket" = He died).

What is a connotative verb?

Connotation is an implied meaning in addition to a literal meaning called a denotation. All words (verbs or other parts of speech) have a denotation, and many also have a connotation. But there is no connotative verb (implying a verb that has only a connotation and no denotation), only verbs that have connotations. Sharon swaggered into the room.
