When you put the balloon in the freezer, it will look like it deflated. So the variables you are observing are temperature and volume. As the temperature goes down, volume goes down. This is Charles' Law.

This experiment can demonstrate, by extrapolation, Robert Boyle's law of the behavior of gases, but more directly, the logical extension of his law by Joseph-Louis Gay-Lussack. Jacques Charles also made observations of this nature but did not publish them - they were eventually published by Guy-Lussack who gave credit to Charles for his observations, that is, that gases expand when heated and contract when cooled, and that this applies to all gases (and vapours of volitile liquids as was later discovered).

This theory was actually presented by Guillaume Amontons about a hundred years earlier (1700's) but took a bit of time to prove.

The wheels turned slowly in those days and there was no internet.
