Dial-up internet is the connection of a computer to the internet using a POTS (Plain Old Telephone System) phone line. Digital data is converted into an analog sound to be transmitted over a phone line to a server waiting on the other end. The server will then forward the data to the target, request the information, and send it back over the phone line to the client.
A way to connect to the internet down a telephone line. A "Service Provider" allows the use of their computer equipment for a monthly fee. They provide a disc with the software programme needed to have your computer dial-up to their equipment via a modem. Dial-up is still available but has been superceded by Broadband and Wireless Internet.
Dial-up Internet access is a form of Internet access via telephone lines. The user's computer or router uses an attached modem connected to a telephone line to dial into an Internet service provider's (ISP) node to establish a modem-to-modem link, which is then used to route Internet Protocol packets between the user's equipment and hosts on the Internet. The term was coined during the early days of computer telecommunications when modems were needed to connect dumb terminals or computers running terminal emulator software to mainframes, minicomputers, online services and bulletin board systems via a telephone line. Dial-up connections to the Internet require no infrastructure other than the telephone network. As telephone access is widely available, dial-up remains useful to travelers. Dial-up is usually the only choice available for rural or remote areas where broadband installations are not prevalent due to low population and demand. Dial-up access may also be an alternative for users on limited budgets as it is offered for free by some ISPs, though broadband is increasingly available at lower prices in many countries due to market competition. Dial-up requires time to establish a usable telephone connection (several seconds, depending on the location) and perform handshaking for protocol synchronization before data transfers can take place. In locales with telephone connection charges, each connection incurs an incremental cost. If calls are time-metered, the duration of the connection incurs costs. Dial-up access is a transient connection, because either the user or the ISP terminates the connection. Internet service providers will often set a limit on connection durations to prevent hogging of access, and will disconnect the user - requiring reconnection and the costs and delays associated with it. Technically-inclined users often find a way to disable the auto-disconnect program such that they can remain connected for days. This is particularly useful for downloading ultra-large files such as videos. A 2008 Pew Internet and American Life Project study states that only 10 percent of American adults still use dial-up Internet access. Reasons for retaining dial-up access span from lack of infrastructure to high broadband prices. Modern dial-up modems typically have a maximum theoretical transfer speed of 56 kbit/s (using the V.90 or V.92 protocol), although in most cases 40-50 kbit/s is the norm. Factors such as phone line noise as well as the quality of the modem itself play a large part in determining connection speeds. Some connections may be as low as 20 kbit/s in extremely "noisy" environments, such as in a hotel room where the phone line is shared with many extensions. Dial-up connections usually have latency as high as 400 ms or even more, which can make online gaming or video conferencing difficult, if not impossible. First person shooter style games are the most sensitive to latency, making playing them impractical on dial-up. However, some games such as Star Wars: Galaxies, The Sims Online, Warcraft 3, Guild Wars, Unreal Tournament, Halo: Combat Evolved, and Audition are capable of running on 56k dial-up. An increasing amount of Internet content such as streaming media will not work at dialup speeds. The V.42, V.42bis and V.44 standards allow modems to accept uncompressed data at a rate faster than the line rate. These algorithms use data compression to achieve higher throughput. For instance, a 53.3 kbit/s connection with V.44 can transmit up to 53.3 * 6 == 320 kbit/s if the offered data stream can be compressed that much. However, the compressibility of data tends to vary continuously, for example, due to the transfer of already-compressed files (ZIP files, JPEG images, MP3 audio, MPEG video). A modem might be sending compressed files at approximately 50 kbit/s, uncompressed files at 160 kbit/s, and pure text at 320 kbit/s, or any rate in this range. Broadband Internet access (cable and DSL) has been replacing dial-up access in many parts of the world. Broadband connections typically offer speeds 700 kbit/s or higher for approximately the same price as dialup. However, many areas still remain without high speed Internet despite the eagerness of potential customers. This can be attributed to population, location, or sometimes ISPs' lack of interest due to little chance of profitability and high costs to build the required infrastructure. Some Dialup ISPs have responded to the increased competition by lowering their rates to as low as $5 a month making dialup an attractive option for those who merely want email access or basic web browsing
Dial -up is the forerunner of DSL, cable . The user uses ordinary PSTN telephone to connect to the ISP. The user uses a modem and dial a number given by the ISP to connect to the ISP. The maximum speed which was achieved will be 56kbps , the main disadvantage is that when you use dial-up Internet facility you will be not able to receive or make telephone calls.

Dial-up internet access is when a normal telephone line and a modem are used to connect to the Internet. The computer tells the modem to dial the phone number of an Internet Service Provider (ISP) which then connects to another modem on the other end.

Dial up Internet is using a land telephone line and computer modem to dial into an Internet Service Provider to gain access to the Internet backbones. The modem takes up 100% of the phone line, not allowing for incoming or outgoing telephone calls until the session is over.

This type of connection isn't as common today as it was 10 years ago, when nearly all home computer users were using modems to connect, typically at 56k speed.

Dial up internet access is the access of internet using a telephone. The telephone is connected to a router, the router is then connected to a computer, much like in using internet nowadays, however you must call a number to gain internet access and the telehpone can not be using while using the internet.

Does a laptop need dialup dsl or broadband?

If you want to be able to connect to the internet with it, then yes, it will need some sort of internet connection. Dialup, DSL and cable are all viable options, or you could also opt for an "air card" which connects via the cellular network, but that's a bit more spendy. Conversely, you could just look around for some free internet via wifi. Many restaurants and most hotels have free internet access via wifi.

Dialup Internet: What's the Use?

Dialup internet is one of the most reviled things in today’s online communities. Slow and prone to disconnection, it is the bane of anyone trying to move large files across the network. But is it entirely useless? Not really – there are actually some circumstances in which dialup internet can be a good thing. The first time someone with broadband will recognize the usefulness of dialup internet is when their cable or satellite connection goes down. In certain areas, the cable will lose its internet capability at what seems to be the slightest little wind, and satellites can have a hard time sending signals through thick clouds. It is with a rueful mood that the customer will then realize that their phone is still working perfectly. This can cause desperate searching for an old AOL disk, especially for internet businesspeople who are literally losing money every minute they don’t have a connection. Another time dialup can come in handy is if a person simply doesn’t want to have to pay for cable. Dialup is typically much cheaper. This makes it popular among the young, as well as in all age groups in some less-well-off countries. Some areas simply don’t have access to broadband internet. When it’s dialup or nothing, suddenly dialup starts looking fine enough. To a city-dweller, it may seem that this problem could only affect undeveloped countries, but in fact, there are many rural areas in the United States and Canada with this very situation. Phone lines, however, are almost ubiquitous, making it possible to dial in to the internet from almost anywhere. Dialup internet is also great for those who only use the net occasionally, or for simple tasks like checking email. While internet businesspeople often have large files to deal with and would be driven “right up the wall” if forced to use slow dialup for an extended period, it just doesn’t make sense for occasional users to make the ongoing investment of a cable or satellite connection. For these reasons and more, dialup internet is not truly obsolete. Whether you’re a light internet user or a businessperson who wants a backup connection, having the ability to just dial up a connection comes in handy.

What are the disadvantages and advantages of broadband?

One advantage to having broadband internet service is that you will be able to surf the Internet fast. One disadvantage is the fact that it is significantly higher than dialup.
