There are many differences. For example, online classes tend to be less formal and more flexible then regular classes. Some people find them easier, as the stress of the professor being in the room is not present, but be warned: it is much easier to forget assignments and justify procrastination when no one's breathing down your neck. Online class credits also transfer differently. Choose well when you pick your classes--you don't want to have to take them again when you change schools. Purely my opinion here, but online classes should be signed up for only when you have no time to attend a supposed "real" class or when no other option is availble. Check the credentials of any "online university" that claims to have certifiable degrees, and be sure to use caution when attending an online class. Also, please don't use chatspeak or L33T during an internet chat with your professor. You're still in class, after all.
Nowadays, there is no difference between online or in-class CAD courses. A lot of colleges and universities offer online and in-class education so you should not worry about quality of those.
Distance learning is popular these days because it's convenient. The distance education compared to traditional classroom learning could change the learning effectiveness, and effective learning requires knowledge of learner styles.
