The "new" moon occurs when the moon is, more or less, between the earth and the sun. This means all we can see of the moon is its dark or "night" side. Two weeks after the new moon the moon is on the other side of the earth, and we see it lit up by the sun. Its phase at that time is full.

∙ 15y agoA new moon is when the moon is in a straight line between the sun and the earth. It happens only one time every avg. 28 days. So if it takes place at noon Pacific Time at 3pm E.S.T. the next new moon might be at noon over England so it would be at 9 AM E.S.T.. By the time it will be noon E.S.T. the Sun would already be shining on the oppersit side of the moon.As the moon rotates around the Earth from a full moon the shines on 7/8th. then 6/8 th. then 5/8 th. then 1/2 then 3/8 then 1/4 then 1/8th. then the new moon then the opperset 1/8 then 1/4 then 3/8th. t6hen the other 1/2 and so forth till the full moon again.

If you are referring to the moon that orbits our earth, the new moon is the phase in which the earth, sun, and moon line up just so that the moon is in the earth's shadow, with no sunlight hitting it, causing the moon to be dark.
