Both are brand names of Software products made by their respective manufacturers i.e. IBM and BEA, however people generally refer to their Application Servers written in compliance with the J2EE specifications maintained by SUN. In that sense both are similar products and work on Java. However there may be differences between both in the way they are implemented and the J2EE features that they offer as well as additional value adds. Those would be too much to list here and suggest that you visit the respective sites of the Vendors.

(These are not just application servers actually but entire suite of products, but generally people mean 'Application Servers')

There's no concrete difference between the two servers. Here is a list of the few differences that I was able to decipher:

1) WL is developing more rapidly than WAS

2) WL is more user friendly than WAS

3) In some cases WAS is slower than WL

4) Classloading is esasier to understand in WL than WAS

WebLogic has focused on emerging J2EE standards and easy to use.

WebLogic has default Transaction Attribute as Supports but WebSphere doesnot have any default Transaction attribute.

WebLogic is easier to setup "out-of-the-box".

WebLogic is way ahead in implementing latest specifications.

WebLogic has a bigger community

WebSphere tends to focus more on web services , integration and connectivity.

WebSphere is available for more platforms than WebLogic

WebSphere has all IBM product stack to back it up.

WebSphere has more integrated IDEs.
