The mountain people in the Western counties of Virginia had always felt like a separate breed from the coastal communities, and never got on with them.
Like many people all over Virginia, the Westerners disapproved of the decision to secede from the USA. So they decided to break away from Virginia and form their own state, which was incorporated into the USA in 1863.
