Lesser (or minor) Jihad is the struggle against the enemy in defending your lands, yourself, your religion, property, family,...

Greater (or major) Jihad is struggle against the devil for not doing evil, not doing forbidden deeds per Islam religion and striving to obey your God and Prophet Muhammad in all your doings and sayings in public and in secret.

This explains why greater Jihad is more important and more difficult. Refer to question below. Major Jahad is more difficult because you need to fight mostly against yourself and your desires. and your enemy is hidden. If you fail in minor Jahad, you will lose your life or your property but if you fail in major jihad you will lose yourself and everything in this world and hereafter.

Since this question asks for opinions, you may get multiple answers.

Answer 1

They are both equally challenging. Refer to related question below.

Answer 2

The Greater Jihad is much more challenging to perform than the Lesser Jihad. The Lesser Jihad is a holy war against opponents with certain requirements for legitimization. However, it is not that difficult to self-propagandize to the point where you wish to fight infidels or tyrants and spill blood. However, a Greater Jihad requires a person to be honest and introspective: to ask themselves troubling questions and seek out the answers. A Muslim seeking to perform this must open his mind to the myriad of possibilities and questions about reality in order to confront his internal demons. This takes diligence, skill, and perseverance to a much higher degree than picking up a weapon with bloodlust.

Jihad, that means in English striving or struggling, is of two types:

  • self Jihad (or oneself struggle and is called the greatest or greater Jihad), and
  • military Jihad (or struggle with others and is called the smallest or lesser Jihad)

Self Jihad (or greater Jihad) is that any Muslim should practice Jihad or self struggle to avoid doing wrong deeds and/or committing sins that are forbidden by Islam and by his community. It is also doing good things that Allah wants you to do, such as following the morals of Quran and prophet Muhammad (PBUH), reciting the Quran, helping the poor, striving to fulfill your family requirements, learning and studying useful sciences and arts, etc.

Regarding Military (or Lesser) Jihad, it is licit only in two cases:

  • First: to defend home land and home people against any invaders.
  • Second: to provide help and support to other people who are oppressed and unable to practice their own will and freedom of choice.

In both cases, Muslims (as in all other faiths) are commanded, by their religion, to be fair and just. They are forbidden; by Quran and prophet Muhammad teachings; to kill a woman, child, or an old man or any civilian. They are commanded not to be excessive in using force and not to terrify civilians. They are forbidden from spoiling the nature, cutting a tree, or polluting/poisoning air or water.

Greater JIhad where you strive within yourself for a creator eg not eating a sweet you like because you found out it has Pork in it. Lesser JIhad is striving for others eg going to war. The reason got this is it is harder to stop yourself from doing something eg eating the sweet geated jihad, rather than stoping someone else which is lesser jihad

Answer 1

Terrorism is neither lesser Jihad nor greater Jihad. Muslims are encouraged to practice Jihad. However, terrorism is condemned per Islam teachings. Refer to questions below.

Answer 2

This question rides very strongly on what the terms mean. Terrorism is determined by each person in his own way, not by some unequivocal standard. (For example, what is the difference between Terrorism and Guerilla Resistance or what is the difference between Terrorism and Militia or Paramilitary Activities.) Typically Terrorism is understood as attacking civilians instead of attacking the military or armed forces of a country whose ideals or actions you disagree with. In this case, for example the actions of 9/11, Islam completely condemns terror.

However, Islam condones and encourages violence against those who evict Muslims from their homes, take their land, or repress Muslims. Therefore there is a general belief that the Liberation of Palestine falls squarely into Islamic thought and proper-action. Yusuf al-Qaradawi, a prominent Egyptian Cleric and moderate said, "Attacking Israeli civilians is sanctioned because every Israeli civilian will enter the armed forces of Israel which is the army of a nation that is occupying and dispossessing Muslims." In this case what is considered to be Terrorism would be part of the Lesser Jihad or the War Against the Enemies of Islam.

Is it a surprise to you that lesser Jihad is only a very small part of the religion?

no one claimed that lesser Jihad is only a very small part of the religion. The lesser Jihad is called so just in comparision with the major Jihad. Lesser Jihad is an important religion teaching to be practiced if attack occurs on one's property, land, family, wife, religion, ... etc.

Do Sunnis and Shiites both believe in jihad?

YES. Jihad is a Qur'anic injunction, so there is no difference between the Sunni and Shiite views of Jihad. The only Islamic group that rejects Jihad as a general concept is the Ahmadiyya community, who strictly view Jihad as an internal struggle. Both Sunnis and Shiites see Jihad as a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God. There are two general ways to do this, the Greater Jihad and the Lesser Jihad. The Greater Jihad is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously; this kind of jihad should be entirely peaceful. The Lesser Jihad refers to conflicts and confrontations between Muslims and Non-Muslims or other Muslims, which often erupt in war, but can also be performed through non-violent protests, debate, and advocacy. It is the Lesser Jihad which is often cast as a Holy War.

Is holy war an accurate translation of the Islamic term jihad?

No, it is not. The Arabic word jihad means to struggle. Various narrations from the Prophet Muhammad emphasize that a war is the lesser jihad, the greater one being the struggle against the temptations that we face in our lives. Refer to question below for more details on Islam.

Does every muslim compete in jihad?

First, we need to define Jihad. Jihad is a tenet of Islam and a religious duty to strive in the way of God. It is the Lesser Jihad which is often cast as a Holy War.Now. the term "compete in jihad" does not make sense. If the question is asking if every Muslim participates in jihad, the answer is "No"; there is no group of people who uniformly do one set of things. However, most Muslims try to participate in jihad, but involvement in Greater Jihad (self-reflection) is far more common than Lesser Jihad (striving to change the world), and involvement in peaceful Lesser Jihad (advocacy and protests) is far more common than violent Lesser Jihad (holy war).

What percentage of muslims support jihad?

Assuming that you are referring exclusively to violent Lesser Jihad, e.g. the Islamic Holy War, as opposed to Greater Jihad (self-reflection and self-improvement) or peaceful Lesser Jihad (advocacy and protesting), the numbers are unclear. A lot comes down on how you phrase the question, whether you are talking about reality or theory, whether you are talking about monetary support or simply vocal allegiance, which Jihadist organization you are talking about, etc. However, we are talking about a significant minority, between 15-40% of Muslims. It is worth noting that less than 1% are actually engaged in violent Lesser Jihad.

Where can you buy a Jihad watch?

What does the Muslim religion say about respect?

That peace is good. I believe it leaves room for a lesser, physical struggle against kafirs or what have you, but the greater struggle is with oneself and your faith (greater and lesser Jihad).

What is the greater jihad?

Greater Jihad, which is an introspective journey to conquer your internal demons and follow the Divine Laws more closely than previously, is a practice to promote a person's piety. The greater Jihad is the struggle to follow Islam morals and teachings and prevent yourself from committing sins. (This is in contrast to Lesser Jihad, which is a social contest of wills.)Refer to related question: What are the two types of jihad in Islam?
