Herpes simplex type 2 is one of the two viruses that cause cold sores and genital herpes. It is spread by skin to skin contact.
There are two types of herpes viruses that each can cause both cold sores (oral herpes) and genital herpes. Type 2 is one of them. It tends to recur more often than type 1. You can't tell them apart by looking at them, but a smear of the sores when they are present can be sent to the lab by your health care provider to find out what type is causing the problem.
