High fructose corn syrup is a caloric sweetener made from corn. It has a composition that is similar to sugar or sucrose. The are two types of high fructose corn syrup commonly used in foods and beverages. HFCS-55 is made up of 55% fructose with the other 45% mainly glucose. It is commonly used as a sweetener in soda. HFCS-42 is made up of 42% fructose and the remaining 58% is primarily glucose. It is used in condiments, baked goods and fruit-flavored beverages.

∙ 15y agoHigh Fructose Corn Syrup is made up of sugar from corn.Everyone says it is bad for you to eat, but not really. Too much of anything can be bad, so if you moderate your in take, you will be fine.

∙ 14y agoIt's used to sweeten many products around us. Soda, ketchup, bbq sauce and almost anything that requires sweetening. It is used because it's cheap compared to organic cane sugar. Studies in early 2009 found that more than half of products containing HFCS (high fructose corn syrup) had contained Mercury which is widely known for causing cancer. HFCS is also known to cause obesity as it tricks the stomach into thinking that it's still hungry. Quote from an article in the Examiner on HFCS: "High fructose corn syrup (HFCS): Is an ultra-refined sweetener that can raise blood sugar levels much like table sugar can, possibly increasing Heart disease risk. Some studies have linked consumption of HFCS to obesity, while others have found contamination of some HFCS samples with mercury. When in doubt, it's best to avoid this sweetener."
