iet and lifestyle are the major factors leading to many diseases. Wrong eating habits, junk food, drug abuse, tobacco smoking and alcohol drinking as well as lack of exercise may increase the risk of developing certain diseases, especially later in life.

"Junk food" is a term used for the food that is of little nutritional value and often high in fat, sugar, salt, and calories. Lifestyle diseases characterise those diseases that occur due to the habits of people and an inappropriate relationship of people with their environment. The main factors contributing to lifestyle diseases include bad food habits, physical inactivity, wrong body posture and disturbed biological clock.

Eating disorder due to junk food becomes more common and the younger population is the main victim of the new eating habit. Rising appetite for junk food, absence of government health policies and other plans are adversely affecting public health. The urban poor cannot afford healthy food and they are also not aware of the risk of lifestyle diseases. A serious problem is that these poor people even don't know they are sick and that they are not seeking treatment, leading to grave consequences later in life.

A health report indicates that Type 2 Diabetes has doubled in the last 20 years and the other related chronic diseases are increasing as a result of it. Obesity is one of the major issues of eating junk food. Lifestyle diseases are also linked to high cholesterol level.

How can we avoid junk food?
Pizza

Pizza as a food contains a lot of cheese and saturated fat. One slice of extra cheese pizza contains two-third of your daily saturated fat limit. To lighten up your pizza, top it with vegetables instead of pepperoni and sausage. Say "no" to breadsticks and "yes" to a side salad and you're on the way to preventing Heart disease.

Fast food

Fast food is loaded with saturated fat and sodium (Both contribute to lifestyle diseases), but its trans-fat make it even worse as it raises LDL (bad) cholesterol. Food manufacturers love fast food because it has a longer shelf life. Doctors hate it for the same reason. Since trans-fat won't break down, it does an extra good job of clogging arteries. If you don't have time to cook or you are travelling, choose the grilled chicken sandwich with lots of salads poured on it. You can also supplement with vegetables, fruit and yogurt.

Soda and carbonated drinks

Soda and carbonated drinks are also likely to cause heart disease, high blood pressure and stroke. Soft drinks are the biggest source of sugar in our diet. High intake of these drinks can cause a spike in blood sugar and lead to inflammation, insulin resistance and hardening of the arteries. A better beverage choice when you want caffeine is unsweetened iced tea or coffee. If it's the carbonation you crave, try seltzer with a dash of fruit juice and a twist of lime.

Big pancake breakfast

Breakfast with pancakes and syrup is a plateful of refined carbohydrates that rapidly increases your blood sugar and harmful triglycerides to raise your risk of heart disease. A small stack of pancakes delivers the equivalent of four servings of bread. A better breakfast option is a whole-grain, multi grain, oats, and rice flacks with eggs, beans and cheek peas.

Prevention of lifestyle diseases

Natural remedies

Natural remedies are an excellent tool to help lower your cholesterol level. Lifestyle changes revolve around a proper diet with low saturated fat, trans-fats and low cholesterol food. With the help of natural ingredients found easily at home, the cholesterol level can be reduced thereby controlling any other risks.

Physical activity

Physical activity will make you breathe faster and more deeply. This maximises the amount of oxygen in your blood. Your heart will beat faster, which increases blood flow to your muscles and back to your lungs. Your small blood vessels (Capillaries) will widen to deliver more oxygen to your muscles and carry away waste products, such as carbon dioxide and lactic acid. Your body will even release endorphins, natural painkillers that promote an increased sense of well-being.

Health benefits

Reduced risk of numerous chronic lifestyle diseases, including coronary heart disease, Type II diabetes, hypertension, and colon cancer as well as improve mental health and enhanced physical functioning. Lose some body fat and also experience improvements in blood pressure, blood glucose and blood cholesterol.

Hydration

If you are drinking enough water, you can easily metabolise the food you eat, and need to drink water in regular intervals throughout the day. Toxin, waste urea and blood cholesterol can be decreased by keeping you hydrated throughout the day.

Artificial flavors are added to foods, for the most part, because they are cheaper than natural flavors. Artificial flavored foods generally are sold faster than natural flavored foods because most consumers want to buy the cheaper option.
