It is a metal- the lightest of all metals, and extremely reactive.

The discovery of lithium is attributed to Johan A. Arfvedson, who identified it in 1817 while analysing the mineral petalite.

Although discovered in 1817, it was 1855 when Sir Humphrey Davy and William Thomas Brande isolated it through the electrolysis of lithium chloride.
