There are many heroes in The Lord of the Rings mainly because it is about the struggle between good and evil and a lot of heroes has to be created in a epic with this theme.

The main heroes are the Fellowhip of the Ring.

This is made up of the 9 beings that agree to try to destroy the One Ring. (I say beings because they include Hobbits, Men, Elves, Dwarves and Wizards)

The Hobbits in the Fellowship are called Frodo Baggins, Samwise Gamgee (Sam), Peregrin Took (Pippin) and Meriadoc Brandybuck (Merry). They are nearly half the size of a man but are very proud and will fight till the death. They fight with short swords but Frodo uses an Elven blade given to him by his cousin Bilbo Baggins. Sam is Frodo's best friend and nearly never leaves his side throughout the trilogy.

The Dwarf is called Gimli. He uses a two-handed axe as a weapon and is a brilliant fighter. He is the son of Gloin. Gimli and Legolas have competitions in each battle they have against the enemy. Trying to beat each other by killing the most orcs/uruk-hai etc.

The Elf is called Legolas. The main weapon he uses are his Bow & Arrow, which he is extraordinary at using and two Elven swords which he is also extremely skillful with. He befriends the Dwarf, Gimli after the triolgy puting aside their looks and differences and proving that Elf and Dwarf can work together.

The Men are called Aragorn and Boromir. They use swords to fight.

Boromir is the son of Denethor, the Stewart of Gondor who loves Boromir more than he does with his other son Faramir. Boromir is a brave fighter and proud of his heritage and of his home city, Gondor. Boromir leaves to join the Fellowship at the council of Elrond and swears to protect the Ring and the Ring bearer but is succumbed to the twisting influence of the Ring and tries to take it from Frodo. When the Uruk-Hai attack the Fellowship, led by Lurtz Boromir fights overwhelming forces to protect Merry and Pippen. He is sadly shot in the chest 3 times by arrows from Lurtz but tries to fight on despite his wounds. He dies in Aragons arms a brave and noble death to the end. Aragon blesses him and calls him a true son of Gondor.

The other human is Aragon. He is the last decendent of the Kings of Gondor who falls in love with the Elf princess Arwen. He is afraid to take up the mantle of King because he is afraid of becoming like his decendents, each one corrupted by the Ring of Power. He witnesses the last moments of Boromir who fears that the end has truly come and that the Minis Tirith will fall. Aragon swears that the white city will not fall nor their people fail promising he will be King. Near the end of the third movie he becomes King and unites the people of Rohan and Gondor to fight the forces of Sauron outside the Black Gates.

Lastly, but definitely not least, there is the wizard Gandalf. To fight, he uses his sword and his staff, which has magical powers. Without him the Fellowship would basically be nothing as he is extremely knowledgable and always knows what to do.

As I said earlier, there are many heroes in the Lord of the Rings. These 9 are the main ones but there are lots more including King Théoden, Faramir (Boromir's brother) and Éomer.

I'm glad you didn't also ask about the forces of evil as I would be here forever!

I'm glad this helped. I havn't watched the Lord of the Rings or read the books in ages but it's been good to remember everything again. I took all this information from the top of my head but I am more than sure that it is correct. I obviously didn't mention all of the heroes as there are too many to think of. I advise you to look them up if you want to know more (The Army of the Dead is amazing. They sound evil but they come to the aid of the good in the final battle at Minas Tirith).

The actors

Gandalf:Ian McKellen, Frodo:Elijah Wood, Arwen:Liv Tyler, Aragon:Viggo Mortenson, Sean Astin:Sam, Cate Blanchett:Galadriel, John Rhys-Davis:Gimli, Orlando Bloom:Legolas, Sean Bean:Boromir, Bernard Hill:Theoden, Miranda Otto:Ewoyen, Karl Urban:Ewomer, Billy Boyd:Pippen, Dominic Monaghan:Merry, Hugo Weaving:Elrond, David Wenham:Faramir.

Once again, I hope this is of help to you :)

I added a couple of changes, hope you don't mind. If do, sorry. From tt93

The warrior monsters in Lord of the Rings are most commonly known as Orcs, though there are several other species. Orcs are the perverted and ruined form of High Elves, who in times past were taken by dark powers and tortured into servitude. Orcs are extremely ugly and take pleasure in inflicting pain and destruction on other living things. Orcs are the species that form the loyal army of the dark lord Sauron, who uses their ability to spawn rapidly to overwhelm the armies of men, elves and dwarves.

Not separate from orcs are goblins, a race of short, sneaking and equally ugly evil creatures that dwell mostly within the Misty Mountains and other places. They are a degenerate form of orc, however, the term goblin only refers to orcs living in the mountains. The goblins might or might not serve Mordor, though they do hold fear for the power of Sauron. The goblins of Moria served the Balrog.

Trolls are creatures born from the rock-mass. They are enormous, very aggressive and often eat dwarves, hobbits and even elves. Trolls cannot be exposed to sunlight, however, for it turns them instantly to solid rock once more. However, Sauron bred the Olog-Hai, on which sunlight has no effect on them, and they are large and more skilled with weapons than any other troll.

The woodlands of Mirkwood are home to another species from Tolkien's epic; the spiderlings. these are giant Spiders, capable of speech, and like trolls readily feast on human, elvish, dwarvish or hobbit flesh.

Dragons also make an appearance in Lord of the Rings, though only in mention, since nearly all the great Wyrms were exterminated before the beginning of the story. Scatha, a giant cold drake, was slain by the Rohan king, Fram. The last of them, Smaug, was killed by the men of Dale in the precursor, The Hobbit.

Similar to dragons are the winged rides of the Nazgul, which though never fully explained in LOTR are known to be malicious and flesh-eating. They differ from dragons only in that they do not breathe fire.

Lastly, the monsters bred in Saruman's Isengard to battle Men at Helm's Deep were known as Uruk-Hai. These were aggressive, fearless and unforgiving cross-breeds between orcs and men. Sauron created Uruk-Hai, that were black, long before Saruman so that they might capture Osgiliath. Uruk-Hai were also known as super orcs or hobgoblins.

Saruman also found a way through sorcery to mix orc blood into men, and they had the appearance of men but they were squint-eyed and large. These, although not a mix between men and orcs, were known as Half-orcs.

If you're talking about the big fiery one in Moria on the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, that's a Balrog. Balrogs are very old demi-gods, in a sense, of the same order as Gandalf, but much more powerful. The name 'Balrog' is a corruption of the word 'Valaraukar,' meaning "Demon of Power.' There's also a kind of giant octopus or kraken-like creature in the lake on the west side of Moria, called 'The Watcher In The Water'. The Nazgul, or 'Ringwraiths,' ride on a kind of prehistoric pterodactyl-like creature, called by some as 'Fell Beasts'.

Other 'monsters' include giant spiders, trolls, wargs (werewolves), orcs, goblins, and half-orcs.

The major antagonist in the Lord of the Rings is actually the Dark Lord Sauron.

Well, it depends what creatures you are talking about because there are many creatures like hobbits, gollum, dwarves, elves, wizards, ents, orcs (goblins), wargs (wolves), mumakil (oliphaunt), the Watcher in the Water, balrogs, trolls, Nazgul and fell beasts, and Great beasts (at the battle of Minas Tirith). Some of the more 'normal' creatures include birds, conies (rabbits), dogs, horses, fish, midges, and spiders (maybe the spiders are not so normal).

In 'The Hobbit' there were also dragons, beornings, fox, deer, and boar.
