The term you may be looking for could be operetta. While lighter and more popular in subject and style, operettas are often, but not necessarily, shorter in duration than the more classic operas.

You may be thinking of an operetta which is shorter and "lighter" in subject and style...usually funny, but not necessarily. ---- Puccini's Gianni Schicchi is a short, funny Opera. It also has one of the loveliest soprano arias in the repertory: "O mio babbino caro."

So many ... One act comedies that come to mind are "The Telephone" by Menotti - two people and about 45 minutes, La Serva Padrona, by Pergolesi, (three people, but one of them is mute, so only two singers), Dr. Miracle by Georges Bizet (composer of Carmen), although that is technically and operetta and if we include them the list gets much longer, Bastien and Bastienna or The Impressario - both by Mozart ...

In the era of Pergolesi and Mozart (who came later), it was not uncommon for composers to write "intermezzi" operas - little one act that were literally performed at the intermission of longer works - often in front of the curtain.
