NASA is working on the development of the Orion Spacecraft which will be the vehicle for the next phase in space exploration. The Orion will be able to travel to the moon and land, which is something the space shuttles were not capable of doing. Orion missions are planned for the Moon and Mars, and possibly some near Earth asteroids.
NASA will also continue using standard heavy lift rockets for unmanned missions.

What is the disadvantage of a space shuttle rather than a rocket?

The dissadvantage of the current NASA Shuttle program is that it is outdated. Some of the shuttles still use 8track tapes, so it is cheaper to retire them and bring in a new system instead of update them.

How did NASA use bar codes?

NASA uses bar codes to monitor the millions of parts they get to build space vehicles. For example NASA had to purchase thousands of heat tiles for the bottom of the space shuttle, for the reentry part of the mission. They were able to track them from start to finish.

What do crews often use to reach the space station?

When is NASA launching it's last rocket?

The Space Shuttle program ends with the final launch in June 2011, but there is currently no plan or schedule to terminate NASA's other research activities, which include the use of other space vehicles and probes.

who the shuttle in space break?

The Space Shuttle was a reusable spacecraft developed by NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program. It was used for a variety of missions including launches into low Earth orbit and repair and maintenance of the Hubble Space Telescope. The Space Shuttle was retired in 2011 and no longer in use. None of the Space Shuttles broke in space.

Why is nasa stopping the use of the shuttle?

NASA is canceling the Space Shuttle program for several reasons. Firstly, there have been 2 space shuttle disasters, leaving 14 astronauts dead. Both accidents were caused by human error and severe problems with NASA management over the space shuttle program. Secondly, the space shuttle is not a very safe vehicle. There have been many close calls on past shuttle missions that could easily have led to catastrophes. The space shuttle is still largely an experimental vehicle with new problems and safety issues being discovered. Thirdly, there is no viable method for space shuttle crew members to escape in the event of an accident. Though Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo all had emergency escape systems, the space shuttle's crew escape system can only be used in a very small percent of circumstances, but in most emergencies the crew would have no chance of survival. Lastly, the shuttle program is expensive. It costs an average of $450 million dollars and many months of training to prepare each shuttle launch.
