The highlighted short version of Darwin's ideas is "survival of the fittest". Individuals with certain characteristics may survive and reproduce more than individuals with other, less successful, variants.

Natural selection can be contrasted with artificial selection, in which humans intentionally choose specific traits in breeding animals (although they may not always get what they want).

Over time, species became better adapted to their environment.

Survival of the Fittest is an accurate yet incomplete assessment of the Situation.

As well, improved Forms produce improved Functions, and these more modern forms have continually ad-infinitumresulted from precursor bio-forms.

It is based on a few basic premises.

1. Individuals vary from one another

2. Individuals inherit variation from their parents

3. An individuals variation effects the number of descendants an individual has

If these things are all true (ie. If organisms do vary, organisms do inherit these differences and the environment has any influence on them) then a runaway process called evolution by natural selection will occur.

That number 1 is true is self-evident. No two humans are quite the same, no two trees are identical and no tree is identical to a human or an octopus.

We know number 2 to be true because of DNA. Your DNA is a combination of your parents DNA, and each of them got their DNA from their parents. Your DNA are the 'instructions' to build your body, so any genetic variation in your parents will be passed on to you (eye colour for example).

Number three has been readily observed numerous times. Polar bears with thick coats tend to do better than individuals with thin coats because they keep warm. etc.

Natural selection is the cumulative non-random selection of random variations.

Contingent evolution is one of the forces of Darwin's theory of evolution. It is based on the concept of how power of accidents and happenstance shape the course of evolution.

Is evolution a theory or hypothesis?

Evolution is an observed and observable fact. The theory of evolution by natural selection explains many things about evolution. The theory generates testable hypothesis, as any good theory does. Remember, theory is the highest concept in science.

What theory that evolution occurs slowly but steadily?

Gradualism is the concept but I would not give it the ranking of scientific theory. It is more a subset of the theory of evolution by natural selection and was first formulated into that theory by Darwin.

Why is evolution reffered to as a theory?

I don't exactly know why evolutionists refer to it as a theory, but I do know this. A theory is an explanation or model based on observation, experimentation, and reasoning. According to the definition of a theory, evolution is not a theory. Evolution cannot be based on observation. No one was here to observe it. So evolution should be classified as a hypothesis not a theory. It is only a guess as to how things came about.
