Hippocrates' most famous accomplishment is probably the writing of "The Oath," better known today as the Hippocratic Oath. Physicians in ancient Greece, and still sometimes today, would take the oath, the basic tenets of which include: do no harm, seek only to aid the patient, and do not abuse one's power as a physician.
Born about 460 BC on the island of Cos, Greece, Hippocrates (Hippocrates of Cos or Hippokrates of Kos ) is often referred to as "the father of medicine". In 400 B.C., people worshipped multiple gods and people believed that gods sent disease as punishment. Hippocrates, however, challenged these beliefs. He contended that every disease had a nature, course, and the cause was external, not divine. He noted that food, occupation, and climate caused disease (see his book, entitled De aëre, aquis et locis (Air, Waters and Places). He systematically and clearly described illnesses, created notes of treatment successes and failures, and persistently followed his ideas that a patient must be considered in his or her environment (e.g. a human ecology). Hippocrates revolutionized the study of medicine and medical conduct in the so-called 'Hippocratic Oath'. This oath, which physicians since ascribe to follow, states certain beliefs about how physicians should conduct themselves in relation to their patients. The oath cautions physicians to practice medicine ethically and honestly, to avoid sexual contact, to keep a patient's confidentiality, and to use what is called today 'best practices'. The 'Hippocratic Oath' is often summed up in one statement as, "Do no harm," but the oath directs more than just the avoidance of harm. Hippocrates died about 375 BC at Larissa, Thessaly. Various stories exist about his death, with accounts varying about his age as from 80 to over 100 years old.
