There are four DNA 'bases' or nucleotides - guanine (G) cytosine (C) adenine (A) and thymine (T). These 'bases' are needed for humans to survive so for the nucleotides to be kept safe, the DNA needs a good barrior; it uses the double helix to keep the consent bombardment of particles from destroying the DNA. If the DNA was using only one strand then it would be easier to destroy, having the double helix allows the DNA to have less areas to be targeted by particles. The double helix protects the nucleotides leaving less space to be destroyed.

DNA consists of two long polymers, these are the "strands,"which are made of simpler units called nucleotides, with backbones made of sugars and phosphate groups joined by ester bonds. These two strands run in opposite directions to each other and are therefore anti-parallel.

Attached to each sugar is one of four types of molecules called bases. It is the especific sequence of these four bases along the backbone that encodes information. This information is read using the genetic code, which specifies the sequence of the amino acids contained within proteins. The code is read by the RNa, by copying stretches of DNA into the related nucleic acid of these RNA molecules, in a process called transcription.

In other words, there are two strands in the DNa molecule, just because that is the chemical structure of the DNA molecule, which act like a skeleton so the rest of the components of the DNA can be organized around these two strands.

One advantage of DNA molecules having two strands is in the duplication. Two strands ensure the same DNA will be replicated as in the original.
