A gastric ulcer is a 1/2-2 inch area on the lining of the inside of your stomach that has been worn away through some sort of contact of acid. Gastric ulcers are sometimes called stomach ulcers or peptic ulcers, though peptic ulcers can also refer to duodunal ulcers. Gastric ulcers are common among the Helicobacter pylori infection, an infection of the pyloric sphincter (the valve connecting the stomach and the upper small intestine). Treatment can be medications such as over-the-counter antacid pills, or your physician can prescribe stronger medications. Three ways to prevent gastric ulcers are to wash your hands before and after eating and going to the bathroom, not smoking, and not over-drinking.

A peptic ulcer, also known as ulcus pepticum, PUD or peptic ulcer disease, is an ulcer (defined as mucosal erosions equal to or greater than 0.5 cm) of an area of the gastrointestinal tract that is usually acidic and thus extremely painful. As many as 70-90% of ulcers are associated with Helicobacter pylori, a spiral-shaped bacterium that lives in the acidic environment of the stomach; however, only 40% of those cases go to a doctor. Ulcers can also be caused or worsened by drugs such as aspirin and other NSAIDs.

An ulcer ( a lesion through the skin or a mucous membrane resulting from loss of tissue, usually with inflammation) at the duodenum (the first division of the small intestine, about 25 cm or 12 fingerbreadths (hence the name) in length, extending from the pylorus to the junction with the jejunum at the level of the first or second lumbar vertebra on the left side. It is divided into the superior part, the first part of which is the duodenal cap, the descending part, into which the bile and pancreatic ducts open, the horizontal (inferior) part and the ascending part, terminating at the duodenojejunal junction.)

Peptic relates to digestion. Duodenitis is an inflammation of the duodenum which is the first part of the small intestine and just below the stomach. Peptic duodenitis is an inflammation of the duodenum that affects digestion.

The duodenum. In the gastrointestinal tract the duodenum is the first part of the small intestine, right after the stomach & right before the jejunum.
