The piaffe and passage are movements exercised by horses while being ridden in the upper-levels of the discipline known as Dressage. Horses execute these movements - in some sense - whilst at liberty (i.e. - under no control or restraints by humans), but in Dressage they are much more refined and precise. The piaffeis a movement in which the rider asks the horse to trot so slowly that the animal almost appears to be trotting in place. When executed properly, the opposing front and rear hooves leave the ground at the same time, in a very precise rythm and speed. The horse's head should be held in frame (with the profile of the face being perpendicular to the ground) when executing this movement. The passage is when the horse is asked to trot with great impulsion and strength. The horse should be collected and the rider should exhibit great control. This movement is slower than a normal trot, but faster than the piaffe.
