I have a cosmotech tv and it uses the same remote codes as a VIZIO tv. I recently got a Vizio blu-ray player as well and the remote said that it will work with a VIZIO tv only, and it worked with my cosmotech TV.

no, the sony hdtv which is also an internet tv, is on the advanced list. it is the only tv which is powered by google and comes with its own "keyboard" remote control. definitely a lot better then Samsung LCD
Most cable providers will also provide a remote that can be programmed to work with the type of tv that you own. I have never seen or used a remote that is specifically for a tv so I would say that they do not work, but your best bet would be to get info from your tv manufacturers.
