A repressed memory is something your mind is blocking because it is too painful. Some doubt whether this is possible because of all the false recovered memories.
The SRA (Satanic Ritual Abuse) scandal involved children saying things happened that were impossible to happen, like getting flushed down toilets into other rooms and stuff. Horrific abuses were alleged. By the time it was over, most of the alleged victims recanted or claimed to be coerced by the police into saying things happened that did not. What started it all was when someone allegedly recovered memories of extreme abuse. The police consulted a now discredited, self-proclaimed expert on SRA, and were vigilant in looking for other "victims," and many came forward, often with the same mindset of the children in the Salem Witch Trials.
