Republicans tend to oppose gun control, abortion, gay marriage, labor unions, socialism, Marxism, etc. They tend to support personal responsibility, a strong but smaller government, states rights, less regulation, and lower taxes. They tend to see social service type work as the job of non-profit agencies and churches.
Those who criticize Republicans tend to say that they support mostly the wealthy, that they are racist and/or bigoted, and that they oppose science.
Republicans are not so much against science as much as they don't like people manipulating others with supposed science. Yes, humans may contribute to climate change, but that shouldn't give others the right to use climate change as a club to bully with. Yes, obesity and Diabetes are problems, but they're not the government's responsibility to fix for the most part, according to Republican ethics. That is the job of individuals. If you cannot avoid eating fast food, that is your problem, and there is no reason to penalize those who don't have problems with misusing fast food. Also, Republicans don't see it as the government's job to fix you if you do wreck your own health. You should have either taken care of yourself better, paid into insurance when you were healthy, or had a medical savings account.
Republicanism is the political movement to establish a republic, which is a state that has no constitutionally hereditary ruler. A republic is not necessarily a liberal democracy like the United States. It may be a brutally conservative Dictatorship such as Cuba, China or North Korea.

The following remarks are a romantic description of representative democracy, and have nothing to do with the question. A republic is a state in which the supreme power rests in the body of citizens entitled to vote and is exercised by representatives chosen directly or indirectly by them. It's a type of government system which stresses liberty and rights. Overall, the direct message is the citizens control the government.
