It is very rare to see a modern screwball comedy as many writers tend to write most comedies in the slapstick format. It is often emphasized by quick funny dialogue and situations that are presented at breakneck speed. It usually has a male and female lead who are more often than not at odds at each other. Sometimes it borders on commentary on class and position of the characters (It Happened One Night.) Sometimes there is some cross-dressing involved (Some Like it Hot) which often furthers misunderstandings. It is often associated with slapstick, romantic comedy, and situation comedy.

- I'm sorry, but I believe that Dumb and Dumber is considered slapstick. Slapstick is another genre of comedy where as the previous reviewer has said - "it's so funny, it is stupid." The term slapstick derives from the term batacchio or slapstick in English which makes a violent sound but does little if any harm to the person who is struck by it. Most comedies of that genre tend to border on ridiculous with exaggerated violence and situations that defy common sense. Elements that make a film slapstick: 1) pain without real consequence, 2) an unrealistic situation becomes impossible, 3) impossible situations, 4) zooming to confuse the audience, and 5) use of stunts that make no physical sense. This is what Dumb and Dumber or any Jim Carrey movie can be defined as.
