The Sphinx asked those who wished to enter Thebes a riddle. Anyone who answered incorrectly, she ate. The riddle was "what animal goes in the morning on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening on three?"

Oedipus defeats the Sphinx with the correct answer to the riddle: "man." Man is born crawling on all fours, walks on two feet during their peak, and uses a cane (three feet) in their elder years.

Oh and the Sphinx was a creature with the torso of a woman and the body of a lion.
