The 2010 census estimate for New York City's population is 8,175,133 (eight million, one hundred and seventy-five thousand, one hundred and thirty-three). However, city officials (and residents) are claiming that there has been an undercount, and that New York City's population is actually around 8.4 million.
It is speculated that many undocumented workers were afraid to take part in the census, despite an ad campaign encouraging them to. It also appears that thousands and thousands of the city's legal residents were simply too lazy to spend 10 minutes filling out the form and mailing it in.

However, the city is officially challenging the estimate, claiming that there has been an undercount, and that the actual 2010 population is around 8.4 million. This would explain a lot, as the city's 2000 population was just over 8 million, and the 2009 population was 8,391,881 (eight million, three hundred and ninety-one thousand, eight hundred and eighty-one).
Residents and city officials alike are incredulous that New York City has seen a population increase of less than 200,000 (two hundred thousand) people in the last decade, and they are equally incredulous that the city has seen a decrease in population in the last year.
