The African veld can be divided into different regions: high veld, middle veld, low veld. There is even an area called the bushveld.

Most of the African veld is in South Africa and Zimbabwe, but part of it stretches into Namibia and neighbouring countries.

Most of the African veld is on what is called the high plateau (flat land) about 2000m above sea level. The land rises up from the coast and then flattens out to form the high plateau (say plat-oh).

Cattle are grazed on the lands which are often covered with long grass. Farmers use the land for crops like corn (maize).

Some of the land is semi-desert, known as the Karoo. This area is very hot and dry during summer and receives very little rain. In winter this same area is extremely cold, having some of the lowest temperatures in the country.
