Why do you remember the Donner Party?

The reason they stand out from other pioneers' is because the cannibalism that occured during their entrapment in the Sierra Nevada's. But that is just the faucet to the story. The story of canabalism pulls people in, but they real story of how many people suffered and fought for their lives against mother nature is what keep the story present in our history. The Donnor Party is an interesting study because so many factors caused the story to unfold and events to occur. There is also a mistery about what actually happened, and they unknown is very appealing to human kind.

The Donner Party was a group of pioneers that became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada (a mountain range in eastern California) during the winter of 1846-1847. Eighty-one settlers from Illinois and adjoining states, led by George Donner, reached the mountains in October 1846 but were unable to cross because of early snow. They set up two camps, one near Truckee (now Donner Lake), the other about five miles away. Some sheltered in log cabins, others in tents. They ate their animals, including the hides and bones, and items of leather. At the end, some of them ate their companions who died of hunger.

In December, 15 persons set out to cross the snow-blocked pass. Eight of them died, but seven got through and raised the alarm. Parties of rescuers brought the survivors over the mountains; the last was rescued in April 1847. Of the 81 emigrants, a total of 48 survived.

We remember the Donner Party because they made some not so wise decisions on which way to travel. The Donner partys' travels helped other people looking to travel west choose smart routes. We also remember the Donner party because of the cannibalism that went on between them. Though sometimes the cannibalism is exaggerated, it did go on.

The story of the Donner Party is an important part of American history, not for what the pioneers did, but as an object lesson to show us what hardships befell our westward-bound ancestors and what fortitude was necessary to overcome those hardships. Their 1846 journey was supposed to take them 2,500 miles from Springfield, Ill., to San Francisco. They didn't have cars or airplanes, only Conestoga wagons drawn by oxen. This was to be a six-month trip, not, as it turned out, a two-year journey.
