Its purpose was the productive and profit full management and defense of the Dutch colony of Suriname. It was founded by the city of Amsterdam, Cornelis van Aerssen van Sommelsdijck, and the Dutch West India Company. The three founders had equal shares in the Society. The Society was liquidated in 1795.
