This is how Congress can remove a federal official.

The Impeachment Process In the House of RepresentativesThe House Judiciary Committee decides whether or not to proceed with impeachment. If they do, the chairman of the Judiciary Committee will propose a Resolution calling for the Judiciary Committee to begin a formal inquiry into the issue of impeachment. * Based on their inquiry, the Judiciary Committee will send another Resolution to the full House stating that impeachment is warranted and why (the articles of impeachment) or that impeachment is not called for. The Full House (probably operating under special floor rules set by the House Rules Committee will debate and vote on each Article of Impeachment. Should any one of the Articles of Impeachment be approved by a simple majority vote, the President will be "impeached." The process in the Senate

However, being impeached is sort of like being indicted of a crime. There still has to be a trial, which is where the US Senate comes in. In the Senate when the Articles of Impeachment are received from the House, the Senate formulates rules and procedures for holding a trial and a trial will be held. The impeached official will be represented by his lawyers. A select group of House members will serve as "prosecutors." The Chief Justice of the United States will preside with all 100 Senators acting as the jury. The Senate will meet in private session to debate a verdict. The Senate, in open session, will vote on a verdict. A 2/3 vote of the Senate will result in a conviction. The Senate will vote to remove the official from office. The Senate may also vote (by a simple majority) to prohibit the official from holding any public office in the future.

The impeachment process as stated in the US Constitution follows when a motion is submitted in the House of Representatives against the US president. If the committee votes and accepts the motion, it goes to a full vote on the floor of the House. if there is a majority vote in the House, it then moves to the US Senate. There is a trial with the US Supreme Court Chief of justice, then senate can debate the issue, viewing all the evidence. If the Senate votes with a majority find the president guilty then the president is removed. And the Vice President takes office of US president.

Who judges the impeachment trial for the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court?

If the Senate tries the Chief Justice, it would follow the procedure used in most impeachment trials. The presiding officer of the Senate or an appointed "Impeachment Trial Committee" would preside, or act as judge, and the other Senators would serve as the jury. This procedure is used for the removal trial of allofficials except the US President, and became legal practice in 1986 when the Senate amended its rules and procedures for impeachment trials.
