Typically, and this is a generalization, a Native American snowshoe is going to consist of a wooden frame resembling a boat shape and then some type of lacing that forms a basket over it. The frame could be a turned up tip in the front and the back forms a "V" shape. This is a reliable shape to traverse through deep snow or challenging terrain as it provides ample flotation. These classic designs are still in use today and are available for purchase at many retail locations. The Ojibwa are a woodland people of northeastern North America whose unique snowshoe design has been copied many times.

There is no one Native American word for snowshoes, since there are (or perhaps were) dozens of Native American languages spoken in areas where snowshoes might be used.

A few of the Native American words for snowshoes that can be found on the web, and the languages they come from, are:

tagluk - IñupiaQ

jáaji - Tlingit

tallluaq - Inuktitut

In general it was all the tribes that did not depend on horses for transportation and lived in northern woodland areas. The Plains tribes did not use snowshoes nearly as much as the woodland peoples, since they were not normally attempting to travel on foot in winter.

Snowshoes are recorded for tribes such as the Inuit, Alaskan and Koyukon Athabaskan, Attikamek, Algonquin, Montagnais, Cree, Naskapi, Mi'kmaq, Huron, Abenaki, Potawatomi, Ojibwe, Ottawa and the Iroquois league of tribes. This is not a complete list.

Why do mountain hikers wear snowshoes with walking across areas with deep snow?

Why do mountain hikers wear snow shoes whilst walking over snow?Seems a bit self answering to me, but I'll humour it.They wear snow shoes because there's snow on the ground, and normal shoes would sink into it due to the high weights - surface area given by their current shoes. This' lowered by the snow shoes' greater surface area.

Why does snow fall off your shoe when you stomp?

When you have snow stuck on your shoe, it all clumps together. When you stomp your shoes it shakes all the clumped snow off your shoes.
