The relationship between the volume and pressure of a gas is an inverse proportionality. Boyle's law is the gas law that relates the pressure and volume of a gas. Specifically, it says P1V1 = P2V2. P is the pressure of the gas and V is the volume of the gas. This means that the for equivalent numbers of particles of the same gas at the same temperature, the product of the pressure and the volume has to be the same, regardless of how much you compress or decompress it. If the pressure increases, the volume decreases, and if the volume increases, the pressure decreases.

A more complete law, called the "Ideal gas law," includes other variables, namely the number of gas particles and the temperature of the gas. It says PV = nRT. P is the pressure, V is the volume, n is the number of particles, T is the absolute temperature, and R is a constant of proportionality that relates all of these values to one another.
