RTS (Request-to-send) packets are a mechanism used by the 802.11 wireless networking protocol which establish an open communiction to an AP or node. The client machine transmits the RTS to the AP which in turn sends a CTS packet (clear-to-send) back to the client. This prevents packet collisions, which are common among unmanaged high density networks. In most routers, the default setting for the RTS threshold will be around 500. Acceptable packet sizes range from 0 to 2'347.

How does rts threshold work?
RTS/CTS threshold is short for request to send/clear to send in wireless networking. This was developed when a problem called hidden node was discovered. Imagine a transmitter or node at point A, another at point C and in between them,a node at point B. Both nodes A and C can communicate through node B but A and C can't see each other. Hence, there will be instances that node A will be sending packets of data at the same time as C and collisions occur. When this happens, the system triggers the threshold to minimize the collision. A handshake of sorts takes place.
