Licensing: License the Windows server(s). Every server must run Windows Server 2003 SP1 or later. That's around $800 License for the the Database server software. Although SQL Server is not required, it is desireable for all but the smallest installations. SQL Server starts at about $2500 License for the SharePoint software. WSS only installs as part of the Win2K3 OS. Licenses are required for internet access, around $75 The MOSS license comes in two flavors, Standard and Enterprise. Standard is about $5K Enterprise tops out at about $40K All the server solutions require CALs and they are around $45 to $95 dollars. License for any anti-virus solution. MicroTrend's solution is about $300, I think. Hardware Microsoft suggests multi-processor 64 bit servers with 2Gb RAM. One server will suffice for operations up to about 500 users. Beyond that complexity and scale the solutoin by adding more servers. A three server farm may suffice for as many as 5000 users. These server miht cost as much as $4500 each. Add servers for High-Availablity solutions. Add servers to support necessary Active Directory and DNS. Add server to support SMTP mail. Deployment and Training. Figure one consultant for 160 hours at $175/hr. to install and document. Figure one trainer $6,000 per week for every 50 students. These numbers are guesses.
