The holy Ark mentioned in the Torah (Exodus ch. 25) was kept in the Mishkan (sanctuary; tabernacle) and held the two stone tablets given by God.
The holy ark in today's synagogues houses the Torah scrolls.
There are a few references to arks in Judaism. First there is Noah's ark, a boat used to ride out the flooding of the world, in which all the land dwelling species of the world were saved from drowning. There is also the ark of the covenant, which is a chest, or container in which the tablets of the ten commandments were stored. This ark has been long lost, although like Noah's ark, there are occasional unsubstantiated reports that it has been found, or that at least someone knows where it is. A third type of ark is a cabinet in which the scroll of the Torah is stored in a synagogue. These traditionally are not built into the building, but are movable, so that in the event of an emergency such as a fire, they can be carried out of the building and rescued. The unifying theme of all 3 arks is their mobility.

The word "ark" is of Latin origin; it is not Jewish. The Jewish (Hebrew) name for the place where the Torah is kept is "the Aron Kodesh": the holy Aron. "Aron", whose meaning is similar to "ark", is generally not used in classical Jewish sources to mean anything other than the receptacle for the Torah (or the two Stone Tablets, in Deuteronomy ch.9 and elsewhere). (The Torah-word for the ark of Noah is not "aron", but something else.)
