What is the average cost to have crown molding installed?

I'm going to talk a little about the cost of crown molding. The average cost of crown molding varies from state to state with the cost of living. When it comes to crown molding most contractors will charge by the linear foot (Linear feet just means any distance or length measured in feet). Some contractors will charge by the corner. When I estimate for crown molding here in Richmond Virginia, I charge by the linear foot. My price for crown molding includes the material cost of the crown molding, and the labor cost of installing the crown molding. You can also get a price for painting the crown molding.

If your taking on the job yourself you can purchase the molding at a local Home Depot or Lowe's whichever you prefer or you could save yourself about 40 cents/linear foot if you find a local mill work/lumber yard.

Cost will vary depending on what type of finish the molding will have, paint grade or stain. Paint grade is cheaper to buy and cheaper to install, it likely costs around $1 per foot, but each trim piece to make up the molding profile would need to be considered (a cove, a flat stock, OG edging, etc.) Labor in my area, northeast, safe to assume $2-$3 per LF installed for paint grade.

A couple of years ago before I retired I charged 50 cents to a buck a foot depending on what it was made of.

Other factors to consider:

• The height of the walls.
• If the corners are square.
• The geographic location.
• Whether or not the area to be worked on is occupied.
• Location of room to saw area.
• Cost of living in geographic location.
• Transportation time to work location.
• Whether the moulding will be painted or stained.
• The going labor rate in your area.

The price to an individual homeowner will depend on all of these factors. Get local estimates and check references before proceeding on any job.
