  • Son Tae-Jin, age 20, South Korea, Lightweight (68 kg (150 lb))
  • Hadi Saei, age 32, Iran, Middleweight (80 kg (176 lb))
  • Cha Dong-Min, age 22, South Korea, Heavyweight (+80 kg (+176 lb))
  • Wu Jingyu, age 21, China, Flyweight (49 kg (108 lb))
  • Lim Su-Jeong, age 22, South Korea, Lightweight (57 kg (126 lb))
  • Hwang Kyung-Seon, age 22, South Korea, Middleweight (67 kg (148 lb))
  • Maria Espinoza, age 21, Mexico, Heavyweight (+67 kg (+148 lb))

So if you want to win international championships, it looks like the best time to compete is between age 20 and 30.
Of course, you don't have to wait until you are 20 to compete in your first match. There are local tournaments available for martial artists as young as 7-years-old. And just because a martial artist retires from international competitions in his 30s doesn't mean he can't go back to the local tournaments and continue competing well past his 60s. It all depends upon the individual and what they wish to accomplish.

It is highly unadvisable to encourage young children to compete before they are ready. There are many benefits to studying taekwondo without ever competing in any tournaments at all.

Should elderly learn Tae Kwon Do?

I think it all depends on what you call "elderly".In general, at any age, one needs to be in reasonable physical shape to do the activity. As long as you know your limitations there really isn't any age limit (in my opinion).I've seen individuals in their 60's start it and do quite well.

This is the next step to Black Belt. It is commonly referred to as Assistant Blackbelt. In some cases if the person wearing this belt is under 16 years of age it is called a junior black belt. The reason is because they cannot be a registered 1st DAN until they have reached the age of 16

What age do you have to be to do Tae Kwon Do?

It's very hard for children under 5 to do taekwondo. This is because they find it very hard to co-ordinate their bodies and do the complicated moves taekwondo needs. (Occasionally a child is ready to train at 4 years of age)And for the upper end of the age scale? There is no real upper limit. If a person is reasonably fit and active they can train in taekwondo up to any age!
