How good of a drummer are you, have you been playing long, what kind of music do you play, are you in a band and how much money do you have to spend? If you play jazz at small bars on Thursday jam night, you need different drums than if you play in a national touring band.

The other problem: every brand of drums sounds different, and every drum line those companies make sounds different.

If you want an acoustic set, and you don't want to spend a lot of money, a Ludwig Element or a Pearl Export would be good. Yamaha Stage Customs are also excellent, but more expensive.

I think it depends on what music you want to play for example, I play heavy metal and thrash metal so I play the ddrum death punx series. but if you're into jazz, I recommend almost any gretsch kit. If you're into rock, I think the Mapex M birch is good but probably the pearl export series is better. It also depends on how much money you have. If you're a begginer with not much money, Thunder is a good starter kit. If you're experienced and have $3000 laying around for a drumset, I definetly think you should go with a Ludwig classic maple. But over all, I like Yamaha and pearl, I just don't have enough money for the kit I want. :'(

This really depends on what sound you are going for, and what type of budget you have. As a punk drummer, i feel that, if you have pretty much no budget, then Mapex kits are definitely the best sound for punk drumming. the kit i have at the moment, and the kit i would recommend for most people is a Pro range Mapex Saturn kit. Like all Mapex kits, it uses thin walnut shells, with an air seal, for guaranteed longevity of the wood. It has a 10" and 12" Tom, a 14" Floor tom, 14" snare, and a 20" bass drum. This is the specific kit i would recommend, but if you are looking for something on a budget, the lower end range is also amazing value for money. Zildjian cymbals are a must for Mapex kits, to accompany them brilliantly, the high range being the ZXT's, you can also pick up the mid-range ZHT's, or even the budget price ZBT's, and still sound great.
