Michael Stackpole recommends pdf because the page numbers remain the same no matter what font you use - he says this way, you can send your manuscript to many different people, and they can discuss it together by saying "on page ___, the author says ..." without everyone being on a different page.

Apart from the above mentioned advantage, pdf files do not carry viruses like exe files do. Earlier exe format was used, but nowadays pdf is the most popular format. I regularly use ebooks as marketing tools. My writers (http://www.freelancewritingdesk.com) prefer pdf.

the nook because of the touch screen for browsing through books and typing and it 's paper like screen. The kindle is the 2nd best because of its paper like screen and qwerty keyboard. The sony reader would have to come in last place because of its short battery life and reviews. The nook color defeats the purpose of an e-reader because of its touchscreen.... an e-reader is suppose to be to be gentle on the eyes (no lights). I recommend buying the nook, it has good reviews and the e-books are easy to get. Also you can check and send emails on it. -web browsing is available for free-

That depends on the generation or version of Kindle that you have.

The first generation only supported MOBI, PRC, TXT, TPZ and AZW

The second generation added PDF, AAX and HTML

The newest ones also support DOC, DOCX, JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP through conversion.

Or, you can always get calibre and convert pretty well any format to any other format.

I would probably have to say the Kindle or the Nook. These are two of the most popular e-readers out there. If you have an android device they sometimes come with pretty good e-readers too.
