It should come off most paint with just a little TSP, some water and a little work. Lamp shades are different though. You might just need new ones if you can't find someone who can clean it professionally.

Depends a great deal on what caused the soot. Oil based products, which release smoke in a fire such as plastics or some candles leave a "oily residue" and can smear when you try to remove them. If the object is to remove the soot without having to paint, you could have your hands full.

TriSodium Phosphate will remove the soot, from most painted surfaces. You will have to rinse several times and still may need to paint afterwards.

Savogram makes a product called (or did) "Dirtex" which I have had good results with over the years. Less rinsing.

I have been a fire repair contractor for over 25 years, and in most cases, if the soot / smoke is heavy, we wash, stainkill (seal) and then paint the walls and ceilings. Depending on the extent and type of soot, we use different stainkills. Bin is a popular product, which comes in three grades. Latex (water base) Oil Base and Shellach Base. We always use the Shellach Base products, as they dry faster and seal in not only stains but any odors as well.

I would try a mild mix of the TSP in a not so obvious area to see what kind of results you get and then make a decision as to how far you want to go with the project.

409 Spray, BAM! spray, Orange Glow or Lysol Basin Tub & Tile cleaner. I prefer 409. They all work great. Start at the bottom of your wall and work your way up. Spray about a two or three foot section. Wipe it off and move upward. If you start at the top or middle area, the nicotine stain will run down and leave a path on the wall which is hard to remove. But after you've cleaned a section, any runs can easily be wiped away. When you do the ceiling it would be best to wet a sponge with cleaning spray, rather than spray the ceiling. You can test the spray and see if it doesn't drip onto your floor.

Don't smoke of course but if it in the air use Air freshener,or a candle with a nice smell of your choice.

My daughter and her family purchased a new home. The previous 85-year old owner claimed she only smoked in the garage...untrue!

When they finally got possession of the house, it reeked of smoke. My daughter and son-in-law have a three year old and are expecting another baby, so this was a horrible situation. We only had three days to help them clean and move, so it seemed that my daughter and grandson would have to move 2 hours away with me and her husband stay at his workplace until we could find a solution.

I did some quick research and read mostly good, some bad, reviews of the "Room Shocker" product mentioned in another forum. It was truly a last chance to solve a tremendous problem. My son-in-law ordered four of the Shockers. They got possession of the house and we choked our way through many hours washing walls, which were so tobacco-soaked the clothes and water were totally brown within minutes. They had the furnace vents cleaned that first day, and the cleaner said it was the worst cigarette residue he had experienced. That night my SIL set the Room Shockers off, one in the lower level of the split level and three upstairs.

I prayed during the night that they would be the miracle we needed. The next morning, it was amazing! The thirteen year old house that smelled like a one hundred year old bar was nearly fresh! It was like the Phoenix rising from the ashes!

There is still a very very slight odor when it rains heavily, but NOTHING compared to before.

The only finding, that I've observed, is to re-paint the room.

We have had tenants who were heavy cigarette smokers --- and the only way in which we accomplish "cleaning" or getting rid of the tar and nicotine was to re-paint the room.

Hope this helps. Just paint!
