If your doing a full color tattoo, meaning just one shade i usually use a round shader, if you want to do transaction from light to dark i use a flat mag. Sizes all depends on what your comfortable with, for a large piece or tribal i use a 25rmag and a 5rs for tighter space. for the tip i use the same liner to fill in. but just try and see what works best for you.
This is my advice I have 6 years of experience currently working as a tattoo artist. Some artist will agree or disagree with my advice.

∙ 14y agoIf your doing a big tattoo your probably going to use a 7 round liner if your doing more detailed work like in a faces lips etc you will probably be using a 1 round liner.
It all depends on the tat, For shading if it is a small area you can just use the 7 round or whichever liner your using if you are doing a huge shading area you will probably use a flat shader which also has different groups of needles from a 3 on up

∙ 10y agoBetween a 6 and 15 is usually ideal for coloring in a tattoo depending on the artist's preference. Another factor when choosing the right sized needle is the shape, choosing a round or flat mag will also determine the needed size and the comfort level for the artist.

That all depends on the size of the tattoo that you are doing, and what you are trying to accomplish whether it be soft shading, coloring, etc. If you are using disposable tube and needle combos, which you should, then the appropriate sized tip will be included with the needle. However, since you must ask I will take it that you are new to the game, so practice on your own legs before you ever tattoo another person and be safe. Best of luck.
