First, thank God for small mercies.

Then treat him with the same courtesy you would reserve for a welcome guest, no more, no less. Ideally without a trace of subservience or resentment.

(If he were not abusive I would suggest giving him the silent treatment in return, but it is NEVER wise to antagonise an abuser.)

Why does an abusive man punish so severely for any human mistake you make such as a thoughtless comment even though you admitted you were wrong and sorry but he yells and gives you silent treatment?

It's about control. Doesn't it feel like he's in control over YOU when he does that. Don't tolerate it. Get out before it turns into something worse. The other poster is correct! You dared to counterman his way of thinking. He is controlling you because your comment could have been correct and his wrong and he knows it. Run!

How does an abusive man respond when the victim gives him the silent treatment because she is just fed up with him?

You've got to be kidding. Nice that you refer to your woman as a "victim." Is that how you address your cards to her or what? Your RESPONSE should be getting some help for your abusive ways ASAP. If that's asking too much, then leave this woman alone. Love her enough to part ways with her in a non-violent, non-hostile way. Allow her to be free and to find someone she can be happy with. Someone who treats her with the kindness and respect she deserves. ~ T They all can react differently. If you're the woman, just get out of the situation, it's dangerous. Don't antagonize him, just leave.

What is the best way to handle the silent treatment?

No one deserves to be subjected to this form of emotional blackmail. Feeling ignored, disrespected, or shut out, and to not know why, is a terrible feeling. The first thing to remember if this is happening to you is that you are not to blame. You are caught in someone else's pain pattern. This person does not know how to express feelings in a healthy way probably because this is what they learned as a child. When someone gives you the silent treatment ask them, preferably in person, to sit down with you and explain what is wrong. That if they stay silent, nothing will change. If reason does not work, for your own sake, pull away and try not to dwell on the relationship. You should not have to endure such treatment. Find a healthy way to move on and keep yourself emotionally healthy.

When someone with npd or bpd gives the silent treatment are they thinking of that person or do they just blank them out of their mind?

This is a very good question. The answer can vary according to the individual. Narcissists do this on purpose and it can be considered a form of emotional abuse. They make the person on the other end feel virtually non-existent and this can be one of the worst forms of emotional abuse. The silent treatment can also be referred to as "silent raging." The individual exhibiting this behavior is raging on the inside and the silence can last from days to months. Trying to talk to the narcissist in the midst of their silent treatment will probably only make them want to continue the period of silence - they definitely think of the person they are ignoring when doing so, but they can also block them out at times because narcissists cannot empathize with any other person. BPD, on the other hand, may still have empathy and may be more likely to think of the person they are ignoring.
