Best Answer

A clue would be anything that indicates some fact about a subject of interest.

In a detective story anything could be a clue, as they are usually disguised as something else in order not to appear too obvious.

eg.

Hastings: Well Poiriot we can discount Madam Summers as a suspect. She was performing with the London National Orchestra on the night of the murder in front of eight hundred people.
Poirot: Performing? How Performing?
Hastings: The Emperor Concerto.
Poirot: Mon Deiu, Hastings! I said how not what. What did she perform? What did she do to perform this performance that eight hundred citizens of London observeded?
Hastings: Well I would think that she played the Piano of course. The Emperor Concerto's a piano concerto isn't it?
Poirot: The piano! Madam Summers plays the piano? Hastings (oh hastings) have you not observeded that Madam Summers has no fingers on her right hand? Would that not serve as a clue that Madam Summers could not play something as complex as the Emperor Concerto on the piano?
Hastings: Oh right.
Poirot: No, if Madame Summers played in the orchestra at all she was in the string section - or perhaps percussion.
