The island of Corsica in the Mediterranean, the French Riviera around Nice have a reputation for their mild climate during winter. Away from mainland France, overseas departement in the Carribbean (Guadeloupe, Martinique) or in the Indian ocean (la Réunion) enjoy tropical climates.

The lowest average summer temperatures are recorded in the regions of Picardy and Nord-Pas de Calais, i.e. the two northernmost French regions.
